Hey! High school students! Want to be a part of the Wren's Nest Publishing Co. in 2009? We thought so!
If you're looking to be one of the all-powerful student editors, we can't wait to receive your editor application before May 10th. It's in the yellow box to the right.
If you'd rather have your work published in our journal, use the submission cover sheet (also to the write) when you send in your short stories, essays, poetry, and artwork by July 6th, please.
Note -- while there are submission and application deadlines, it's never too early to send things our way. Hop to!
2008's Wren's Nest Publishing Co. yielded Vernacular, our second publication created in partnership with the Decatur Book Festival.
It was the same (awesome) drill: our editors met twice a week throughout the summer and teenagers from all over Atlanta contributed short stories, poetry, and artwork. We couldn't be more proud of the result.
In 2008 the Publishing Company editors were able to play a big role in the teen programming for the Decatur Book Festival. They chose the name for the event venue "The Escape" and within it created a coffeehouse for Vernacular's authors to meet, read their work, and enjoy music from a local band. As usual, all decisions were made by high school students and local vendors (like Johnny's Pizza and Starbucks) donated food and drink.
We even took some pictures along the way. Check us out at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, at Paste Magazine, and at the Decatur Book Festival.
At the 2007 Decatur Book Festival, the Wren's Nest Publishing Co. released Soy Nut Butter: Delicious, Nutritious, Fictitious, a literary magazine produced completely by Atlanta-area teenagers. Soy Nut Butter was a first time collaboration between the Decatur Book Festival, the Wren's Nest Publishing Co, and teenagers from the Atlanta area.
Here's how it happened—seven high school students gathered at the Wren's Nest throughout the summer to solicit, collect, edit, and publish submissions from a wide pool of high school students throughout the metro area. With a little help from the likes of Paste Magazine, the AJC, Lenz Marketing, and Hollis Gillespie, the student editors rolled up their sleeves and churned out one heck of a magazine.
We officially kicked off Soy Nut Butter--a Teen Literary Salon on Saturday night, where select authors had a chance to read from their work. Like Soy Nut Butter itself, the Salon was completely produced by high school students. We had live music and free food through generous contributions from The Chocolate Bar, Mediterranean Grill, Roly Poly and Feast.
In case you couldn't make it to the DBF, pick up your copy of Soy Nut Butter at the Wren's Nest. They're $1, and proceeds will support the future of the Wren's Nest Publishing Co, the publishing arm of the totally awesome 501(c)(3), Wren's Nest House Museum.
