Joel Chandler Harris recreated the oral tradition of the Brer Rabbit tales in print between 1876 and 1908. Their success made Harris one of the most popular American writers for the next 50 years. His first collection, Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings, has been translated into nearly 30 languages and has never gone out of print.

Despite his literary success, Harris was a newspaperman first and foremost. He worked as associate editor of the Atlanta Constitution for 25 years. Throughout his career, Harris was a significant voice for the New South and supported socioeconomic, sectional, and racial reconciliation.

At the time of his death in 1908, Harris' popularity as a writer was surpassed only by that of his friend and admirer Mark Twain.
