Wren’s Nest Conservation Update — Basement Door
Written on January 13, 2009 at 12:08 pm, by Lain
The old basement door to the Wren’s Nest is a lot like my pants often are — full of holes and a little short.
The door was missing about eight inches in some places. Critters of all sizes could come and go as they pleased.
Our carpenter made us a real, live, working door with hinges and everything. It even goes down to the bottom! It’s like a fairytale.
We’ll have more updates about this entryway in the future — specifically, the part where we clean up the rubble that threatens to twist ankles left and right. For now, I’m super-satisfied with the door.

That door looks really nice. Make sure when they paint it, they paint the cut ends at the top and bottom really well. That should help to prevent the decomposition that the previous door experienced. Have I mentioned that I love Historic Preservation?
Wow! The Wren’s Nest is moving on up! Just one question: how will the door be painted? I like the two-tone design of the old one.
Kirk, I’ll have my people tell the paint people.
Catherine, great question! One of the things we’ve found out recently is that our historic paint analysis didn’t cover every single thing. Most notably, it makes no mention of the window sashes, nor does it cover the detail on the porch (what’s there now is just an educated guess).
I’ll try to figure out why they went with green on the door. The two-tone is a result of a board that they put on the door to keep the critters out. The board kept the critters out, but it kept the sunlight too. It simply didn’t fade with the rest of the door.
Maybe we can keep it two-tone for new-times’ sake.
Critters of all sizes…critters like Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear?!?!?! Well, when God closes a door, he always opens a window.
I know about another former carpenter who helped to make life better for generations to come: harrison ford.
Your carpenter did a very good job. Looks like the critters will find it very hard to enter through that new door! LOL
