Song of the South Anniversary on WABE’s City Cafe

Written on November 14, 2009 at 2:42 pm, by Lain

Our local NPR affiliate WABE invited me to stutter speak on City Cafe the other day in light of the recent anniversary of Song of the South.

I sat down to speak with the indefatigable John Lemley about the controversy surrounding the film and its relationship with Joel Chandler Harris’s Uncle Remus stories.  Listen to the podcast here.

Unfortunately, while at WABE I did not see Lois Reitzes and thus could not challenge her to a rap battle.

Good job, Lain. We should revisit the idea of hosting forums to discuss and illuminate conflicting reactions to Harris’ work.

  2. Rebecca says:

    ‘Reeaaalllly’
    ‘yep absolutely’

    stirring Lain. Well done sir.

  3. Stutter? Lain, I think you sound really gosh darned articulate. Well done!

  4. John says:

Nice job, Spunky Lain. A rap contest? Sounds to me like you’ve just planned the next Wren’s Nest concert series.

  5. Tom Hill says:

Nice interview Lain. Loved the way you made the distinction between Harris’s writings and the movie. I remember being read the stories as a child. My memory is of great stories and in black and white, probably because of the artwork in the old editions. I never saw the movie until recently. Unwittingly (and I think Disney was a certain genius) the movie I believe has done a lot to malign the reputation of Harris, when actually Disney meant it as a great tribute to him. The movie with all it’s Disneyfaction of the stories just doesn’t do justice to the mythological importance of the tales tales recorded by Harris which possibly have the magnitude and importance of and importance of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Edith Hamilton’s Greek Mythology and the Ramayana. But enough said.

  6. [...] This isn’t Lain’s first rodeo.  Remember when he was talking about Song of the South’s anniversary on WABE’s City Cafe with John [...]
