I am deeply in love with the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau
Once upon a time Lain decided to do something nice for The Wren’s Nest and joined the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB). You know, the people who tell tourists what to do with themselves.

We’ve had a pretty great relationship with them so far; they’re nice, we’re nice, it works out well. Plus, they allow us to make connections with other venues around this fair city that weenies like us wouldn’t be able to achieve ourselves.
On Thursday Lain and I went to a networking event for the ACVB and it. was. awesome. Here’s why:
1. They hold these events at neato locations like Braves games and No Mas Cantina. This one was held in the atrium of Phipps Plaza, which is ritzy and no place for the likes of Lain and I, but we tricked ‘em and got in anyways.
2. They had free food! While Lain dined on tasty treats from The Oceanaire, I delighted in chocolate covered cheesecake- on a stick!
3. The only thing better than free food? Free beer! And free good beer!

Here’s a distinctive claim for the staff of the Wren’s Nest: we’re pretty sure we were the only people who got carded at this professional networking event. We win!
4. Plus, and I think this was the whole point, we made a lot of great contacts that are bound to benefit the Wren’s Nest. Which is good, I guess.
5. Lain and I are incredibly awkward. This isn’t good, so much as true. However, to help folks like Lain and I, the ACVB makes “Bingo” cards that force you to talk to people you don’t yet know. Other than triumphing over your crippling awkwardness, the Bingo cards have an added incentive: fill one out and you get to enter a raffle!

Well guess what, chumps. I won the raffle. Booyah!
My prize? Two free round-trip tickets on Delta to basically anywhere in the US, plus Canada and Mexico. Wowee! The Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau will make a tourist out of me! How meta.
The real highlight? When people asked me who I was going to take with me, I answered “My boss, of course!”
Friends, that is funny.

Might I suggest a visit to a recently wind-tossed little burg on the shores of Lake Michigan? (Note- power restored!) I know… I know….
Congrats! I suggest waiting til cold, cold January – or February – and taking off to Mexico!
How many people attend these events? Is it something we could host at the Wren’s Nest? Will there be another before the Concert? We could give away a couple of tickets.
Great idea, Ronni.
We could totally host one outdoors.
Unfortunately, I think these things are quarterly, so probably no time to sneak in those tickets!
Ronni’s good idea got me to thinking…maybe we should host a raffle at our DBF booth for 2 tix to the concert? Give us your email and we’ll enter you in a drawing to win…this way we can build our email marketing database and market the additional concerts and events.
PS Congrats Amy on winning the raffle. That rocks!
Amelia, remember when they took a picture of you shaking the Delta person’s hand? Did they say they were going to put that online?
I was too busy giving everyone high fives to listen while you were up there.
that’s my favorite story of the past 2 days (mainly because I hadn’t heard any stories in the past 2 days) but that’s really funny, regardless.
two things:
1- you aren’t awkward
2- where are you going? Do they consider Brazil part of the US?
I was concerned that we were not paying you enough dinero this puts us in the Black as to your paycheck. (Ha Ha) The suggestion for Mexico is great. May I suggest San Miguel De Allende. I can fill you in on the details. Congratulations I can not think of a more deserving person. You might want to consider someone other than the boss as your traveling companion??? I am just kidding.
While it’s true they did take a picture, Lain, I was too busy (a) trying to play it cool, (b) denying that I was overexcited -while completely overexcited- to the photographer, who was totally making fun of me, and (c) willing myself to negate the effects of no dinner and 1.75 beers to notice where that picture is going. Perhaps in the Awkward Hall of Fame picture gallery? (Thanks for the kind words, Gaber, but you know it’s true.)
Thanks for all the congrats, folks!
Since they are quarterly, let’s go ahead and offer to host one next spring – it would be great.
I have asked Joann Haden-Miller to buy a table at the concert – no response as yet – but I think it’s a possibility. I have one table sold, working on a 2nd and 3rd.
When is something going to be on the website about the concert?
r:)
Wow, you’re good, Ronni.
