Ghost Hunt 2007, v4.0: Ladies Night

Written on June 2, 2007 at 9:55 pm, by Lain
You heard right. It's ladies night at the Wren's Nest. Ladies Night (That's me on the hood) And these aren't just any ladies--they're ghost huntin' ladies! All nine of them just waltzed in, and it's about time, too! I get nervous here by myself after dark. Nothin' like a pack of ghost hunting babes to keep me warm. Stay tuned for live updates. 10:08 PM: Feeling good, settling in. Just a few hours ago I was judging our youth poetry slam here at the Wren's Nest, and now I'm ghost hunting on ladies night. Does it get any weirder? The vibe is a little different than your average ghost hunt (check out earlier ghost hunt vibes: one, two, three, and four). I feel like we're setting up for a tea party or a baby shower or something, so I'm pretty relaxed. Crackin' wise, bein' cool kool as usual. I do not expect this to last long. 10:51 PM: Just finished an EVP in Joel Chandler Harris' room. It was quiet. Maybe too quiet. When one of the ladies asked if it was appropriate that women now had the right to vote, the lights flickered. 11:35 PM: In order to measure energy, ghost hunters often have electromagnetic wave meters. EMF Meter In Joel Chandler Harris' room, they wedged a dime in the meter (in the slot under the colors) so nobody would have to stress their thumb pressing it the whole time to keep it on. When the meter is on, the green light on the left is solid. The other lights go solid according to the amount of energy detected. In the daughters' room, we used a thumb instead of a dime, and as a result, the readings on the meter were much more active. The girl ghosts were chatty Cathies, I tell you what. How weird is it when you ask a question to the room and then a machine responds and then you're supposed to assume that the response is the work of a spirit? Real weird. Also, what does it mean when you use something unbiased, like a dime, and get no results? Especially when you next use something potentially biased and get results? 11:57 PM: Ghost hunting has given way to discussion of Memoirs of a Geisha (book and movie). We'll regain focus soon, I think. 12:44 AM: More discussion with a female ghost in the hallway. We do this with all of the lights out for added scariness. Also, added sleepiness. In the middle of our alleged discussion with a ghost, one hunter started snoring. Boo! That's it for tonight, apparently. I'll update this tomorrow with closing thoughts. For now, however, it's time to hit the road before I have to turn the lights out by myself.

  1. Hi, Lain – Thank you so much for your kind hospitality in hosting our Ghost Hounds Ladies Night .

I so enjoyed reading your blog of the evening’s adventures.

You certainly have inherited your great-great-great Grandad’s muse as a writer, antiquarian & humorist in your own right !

You should be very proud of the work you have done already on behalf of your ancestral home & museum, Wren’s Nest.

I know that my fellow Ladies-Who-Hunt join me in saying that we were truly honored to be so welcomed not only by you but possibly by your ancestors as well. All there that evening commented on the very joyful, loving atmosphere we’d felt during our investigation.

Please visit our “home” our website:

    http://www.ghosthounds.com

And check out the Message Board for the posting

Our one disappointment was that we didn’t get to see how long you could indeed hold your breath while modeling the proper swimming attire required for the competition !

Lain, we look forward to sharing our findings with you. Pam, our Investigation Team Coordinator will be in touch with you soon.

Be prepared for some major excitement for the best is yet to come !

Glad to say, we Ghost Hound Babes aren’t “just whistling Dixie”.

  2. lain says:

Great. Y’all are welcome back anytime. It’s always fun and weird and frightening.

  3. Hi, Lain –

“Oh, it’s Ladies Night. . . ” Wind up the Victrola because we Ladies of Ghost Hounds are honored to accept your kind ( & brave!) invitation to return to The Wren’s Nest tomorrow, Friday June, 22. for the revealing of our findings from our Ladies Night investigation on June 2nd.

I am sorry to say that I will not be able to attend, but I so look forward to my next visit. We love to spend time at the museum, which does feel more like a home to us. There are always good folk (earthbound & non) to share great stories.

  4. Scary, Strange & True Confessions Time

As you can tell, I feel very much at home at Wren’s Nest because I so enjoy being in the company of your family spirits. They are indeed very warm, witty and love to laugh. Their joy is contagious. I also feel at home sitting on the stairway because my Great Uncle Loring Dodd, a professor of Fine Arts often visits me in my dreams to kindly nudge me into returning his rare turn of the century illustration, oils & and rare book collections back into his Victorian home in Worcester, MA to create museum which would also include all of his interviews in his home with memorable friends of his day such as Robert Frost, Helen Hayes, Amy Lowell. I’ve always wished that I could fulfill his dream. Second best to that, I am fortunate enough to have seen you fulfilling yours in a way that certainly make your ancestors proud. So they have communicated.

So, Lain, I hear that you’ve accepted and won the challenges inherent in grant writing. Congrats on your hard work well done! I have a grant idea you may wish to pursue. That being from The Smithsonian’s link here: http://www.folklife.si.edu/center/Archives/archives_Links.html
