Not Included on the Wren’s Nest’s Events Page
And we thought Ms. Nannie’s previous fan mail was good.
Behold! The best response yet from our visitor surveys (you know, what you fill out after your tour to give us feedback):
Question: Is there any way we could improve your next visit to the Wren’s Nest?
(Real, not making this up, terrifically optimistic) Answer: “Spend the night with Nannie!”

Brer Wear — Now Featured at the Wren’s Nest Online Store
Have you taken a gander at our online store yet? It’s new, up, and running, and we’re pretty proud of it.
But hey, what’s that? Local celebrity bloggers the Asian Cajuns are in our store too? How did they get there?! Answer: THE MAGIC OF THE INTERNET!
While our friends Lauren and Catherine are not for sale, the shirts they’re wearing sure are. We asked them to model the critter tees for a few reasons:
a. They are far more photogenic than old Closed Eyes McGee over here and her boss, Vermilion-Pate. Plus they do things like use professional photographers.
b. They have a fashion blog! A popular one at that. If their endorsement of the tees isn’t a ringing one, I don’t know what is. Their endorsement is especially helpful since we’re shy in a 7th grade wallflower kind of way — we’re sure there are people out there who would like us, if only they knew we existed. Maybe now a few new folks will find their way to our land of tricky rabbits and surprise machetes.
c. Sometimes we just get sick of seeing our faces all over this thing. Just kidding! We’re totally self-obsessed! But we still like variety.
Even if you’re not in the mood to shop, I encourage you to hop on over to the store. You might just enjoy our descriptions of the items. They took hours — hours! — to compose, and the effort shows. I think.

The Wren’s Nest Publishing Co.’s Lady Problems
Sunday was the deadline for Wren’s Nest Publishing Co. editor applications and I’m happy to report that we got more this year than any before. Like, almost double last year. Color us triumphant!
One teeny tiny asterisk: almost all of our applications came from women. See: all but one. And that one? He’s got some major scheduling conflicts that, if we’re being totally fair, should prevent his acceptance.
Thing is, we really, really, really do not want this to be a single-gender program. A coed dynamic is key, and I fear that an all-girls program will beget an all-girls program and so on. Yuck.
So. What do we do? I figure the options are:
- (a) Extend the deadline, with heavy emphasis on men
- (b) Admit the sole fella, scheduling conflicts and all
- (c) Ignore it — smart students are smart students, period
Got a better idea? Leave your brilliance in the comments! I’ll be lightly fretting in the meantime.

The Wren’s Nest’s Fall Concert: Kingsized
What are you doing on Saturday, September 27th?
Having Taqueria del Sol for dinner? Enjoying a rolicking good time with your friends? Contributing to a good cause? Jamming like you’ve never jammed before?
How about doing all of the above in ONE PLACE?! No, it doesn’t involve witchcraft.

It’s the Wren’s Nest’s annual fundraising concert!
We’re pleased as punch that the legendary Kingsized will be blowing the roof off our open-air amphitheater, and that sweet, sweet Taqueria del Sol will be providing the sustenance. Will I ever tire of their tacos? All signs points to: nope, not ever.
You can buy your tickets ($60 per person; dinner and swell times included) here at the Wren’s Nest or via credit card over the phone (404-753-7735). We’re working to set up ticket purchasing online, too. You’ll be the first to know when that happens, promise.
September 27th is rapidly approaching (see: what?!), so buy your tickets now! Or, if you must, tomorrow.

Our Friends The Asian Cajuns Are Famous!
Local fashionable bloggers, twins, and friends of the Nest Lauren and Catherine Lee are featured today on AJC.com.

(Historical aside: the gazebo pictured is dedicated to J. Robin Harris, great-grandson of Joel Chandler Harris. It’s in Decatur. The connections simply don’t quit!)
Looking good, ladies! You should probably check out their blog, AsianCajuns, right now.
We originally met the Lee twins thanks to Lauren’s fantastic work (yay Lampe-Farley!) on the Wren’s Nest website. She did things like, you know, create it. Thanks Lauren!
Ever since, they’ve been great chums. Especially since they allow us to put up pictures of them making funny faces.
See?

(Lauren and Catherine serving cake at our last Victorian Christmas. Nice shirt, Lauren.)
Anyhow, nice work famous friends!

Everybody’s Working on the Weekend
Now, I know the kids these days often use their Friday nights for wooing their sweethearts and going to the disco, but here at the Wren’s Nest, we have bigger and better things to do.
Specifically, host a great and totally confusing (for us) concert! Woot!

(Theresa Hightower, doing what she does best: singing about thinly veiled sexual euphemisms! Dentist’s drill, anyone?)
Friday night the Wren’s Nest hosted (totally awesome) Theresa Hightower to kick off the West End Tour of Homes. We used our splendid amphitheater and guests brought their own food and drink, which made things pretty easy on our end.

(Food adorably carted in a wagon and Theresa Hightower in the background.)
In fact, we had so little responsibility, we actually had no idea what was going on. Luckily, there was wine, so we quickly got over our worry and had a grand old time. Like these people:

Or these people, including Board Chair-to-be Janice:

Or even these people, featuring recently-blogged-about West End Developer Suna Om (she gave me her card!):

Frankly, a good time was had by all and the only downside was that we had to lie and say our bathroom was out of order.
Sometimes people forget that port-o-lets are not just for decoration. And yes, while you really have to go, we really need to not have people trying to bust into the museum. Sigh.
Part 2 of our weekend adventures coming tomorrow!
Until then, you can tide yourself over with pictures on the Wren’s Nest’s facebook page! (Not a fan of the Wren’s Nest yet? Don’t talk to us. You sicken me. Err, become one today!)

1984: A Good Year for the Wren’s Nest, Saddle Oxfords, and Baby Fat
Last week, Lain and I attended Ed Negri and Bill Balzer’s presentation for Georgia Center for the Book, a quality organization that has nevertheless asked Lain to be a member of its advisory board. Go figure.

Mr. Balzer showed his documentary about Herren’s, the restaurant Mr. Negri owned and managed for over 40 years.
The restaurant had a profound influence on Atlanta history (See: Herren’s was the first restaurant to integrate in Atlanta in 1963. Yikes!). Negri even wrote a book about his experience, Herren’s: An Atlanta Landmark, which includes such fun details as the fact that he had no restaurant training and was in fact duped by his family into running the place.
Sounds like an Executive Director I know.
If you click on the link above you’ll see that we’ve covered Mr. Negri before, but I think it’s worth repeating–
In 1984, 21 years after integrating Atlanta’s restaurants, Ed Negri helped integrate Atlanta’s oldest house museum.
If you’re shocked that the Wren’s Nest wasn’t integrated until 1984, consider yourself in good company.
While Ed Negri may have been up to some rather well documented business in 1984, it’s not exactly like Lain and I were slacking off. We too were very busy. Exactly what were we up to?
Oh, right–looking chubby!

Believe you me, it takes real commitment to sport cheeks that fat.

And look at Lain go! Those cars weren’t going to roll themselves!
Fast forward to last week, 2007–Lain, Amelia, and Ed Negri finally meet. It had been a long day, and Mr. Negri said just about all he had to say, including that his cell phone was the one we had heard cock-a-doodle-doing during the documentary.
There was only one thing to do–hand him the inaugural “Protect the Nest” t-shirt. I think he earned it. Sensing the importance of the moment, Mr. Negri put it right on.

Ghost Hunt 2007, v4.0: Ladies Night
You heard right. It’s ladies night at the Wren’s Nest.

(That’s me on the hood)
And these aren’t just any ladies–they’re ghost huntin’ ladies!
All nine of them just waltzed in, and it’s about time, too! I get nervous here by myself after dark. Nothin’ like a pack of ghost hunting babes to keep me warm.
Stay tuned for live updates.
10:08 PM: Feeling good, settling in. Just a few hours ago I was judging our youth poetry slam here at the Wren’s Nest, and now I’m ghost hunting on ladies night. Does it get any weirder? (more…)
