Our Yard is Lovely. No Really, Just Ask Jason Travis!

Written on June 18, 2010 at 10:42 am, by Amelia

Have you checked out our “Host Your Event Here” page recently?  Not to brag (just kidding — clearly to brag), but it is looking mighty handsome these days.

Here’s why:

Photographer and righteous dude Jason Travis shot a wedding we hosted recently. Jason graciously agreed to let us use a few of the photos to hawk our wares, which is much better than just promising the space looks nice over the phone (our former method).

Please, take a moment to check out the page and Jason’s gorgeous work therein – much improved, right?

Thunderstorm Forces Wedding Inside the Wren’s Nest

Written on August 2, 2008 at 8:32 pm, by Lain

This evening we were all set to host our friend Kay’s wedding.

The tents were up, the faux Corinthian columns were in place, and the cake was in the fridge.  We were ready.  But then this thunderstorm comes barreling out of nowhere.

To be fair, I guess it barreled from the north.

For those of you familiar with our grounds, you probably understand that we have no rain plan.  We’ve got the museum, sure, but it’s not like we can just invite everyone in when it rains.  That would be stupid.

But when there’s bonkers lightning and howling wind knocking down tree branches, we didn’t feel comfortable with everyone sitting under tents held up with metal poles.

Tents in the Wren's Nest Backyard well before the storm

So everyone from the wedding took cover in the Wren’s Nest.

Yes, all 2 million of ‘em.

Quick, everyone in the other parlor!

And while our air conditioning system ain’t bad, any time you have 2 million people in one house, it’s gonna get hot.

Quick, everyone in the parlor!

Luckily, the bride and groom invested in awesome fans with their picture on the front.

Bride and Groom Fans Were a Great Idea

It’s clear that they know how to throw a party.

Obviously this wasn’t the best case scenario (and especially not from an historic preservation perspective), but folks remained upbeat, and the rain passed quickly.

It wasn't so bad.

So it wasn’t too bad.  And now the air outside feels nice and cool.

That said, below are my field notes:

  1. I’ve enjoyed making 2 million new friends.
  2. We’re lucky that Kay, our friend the bride, is pretty laid back and didn’t flip out when Mother Nature rained on her parade.
  3. This cannot happen again.
  4. Sometimes it’s unfortunate that there’s pressure to generate revenue from outside events.
  5. Sometimes a minor disaster can be great marketing.
  6. I’ve been at work for way too long, and on a Saturday no less.
  7. Good thing I brought a few beers.

Wedding Guest Book: The Favorite Uncle Remus

Written on June 24, 2008 at 11:22 am, by Lain

The couple that got married here at the Wren’s Nest on Saturday night used one of the books from the museum as their guest book.

The Favorite Uncle Remus or My Favorite Wedding Guestbook

Fitting, no?

I especially like that Brer Fox weighed in on things.

Backyard Soundtrack: Recorder Jam Band

Today our soundtrack at the Wren’s Nest is being provided by The Family Consort, a “jam band” that plays recorders.

Just figured we’d keep you up to date on what’s happening in our backyard.

They’re in a wedding here tomorrow, and currently getting a feel for the venue.  You never know about backyard acoustics, I guess.

Also, please pardon the cinematography.  I’m just learning how to use the camera.

Wren’s Nest: The Wedding

Written on May 24, 2007 at 9:46 am, by carson

Remember how Lain was worried sick about the wedding we were hosting at the Wren’s Nest on May 5th?

Well, it went great. It didn’t even rain. Not one drop!

The grandma of the bride had a wonderful time:

So did the groomsmen:

We had a mishap involving some tipsy bridesmaids:

But overall, the event met with overwhelming success.

When the bride rolled up in one of Willie Watkin’s vintage horse carriages, the guests looked on in silent awe. The house nodded. The magnolias curtsied. The amphitheater beamed. It was magical.

In fact, we should do this again! And again, and again! I mean, with grounds like these and attractive prices to boot, who wouldn’t want to get married here? Or host their next book club meeting, or family reunion, or poetry reading, or rock concert, or championship slip-n-slide competition?

Marshall and I feel we need to give our publicity efforts a little kick in the rump, because otherwise this gem of a venue is growing weeds with no good reason to pull them!

So, I’m going to make a flyer. And I’m going to give it to lots of people. And they’re going to rent out our grounds and have a fantastic time and tell all their friends that the Wren’s Nest is all the rage, just like parking spaces and online data storage!

Help us by spreading the word!
